Desert, Kazakstan 1999

The desert village area around Aral Tobe is a cultural melting pot. Descendants of populations who were dumped there in the Stalinist times linger on, and elderly German-speakers could still be found. The once-dominant Russian villagers now find themselves secondary citizens. The Muslim Kazaks spend summer in their yurts. Mouldering structures from nomadic times lie abandoned in the desert.
